The presence of Maiya The Don, That Mexican OT, and LaNell Grant was felt during the 2023 BET Awards Digital Cypher. During the Hip-Hop commemoration, the trio spit some heat over Latto’s “Put It On Da Floor.”

Maiya went first and rapped about her lyrical prowess and her status as a rap newcomer. The Brooklynite challenged other emcees to come to see her pen and declared that she would be one of the greats in the end. Maiya also had the standout line of the cypher that received a reaction from the crowd. “I put the Timbs (Tems) to ya head like an Afrobeat,” she asserted as the crowd roared approvingly.

LaNell Grant stepped up to the microphone next with an unorthodox flow. Her rhyme scheme weaved in and out of the Go Grizzly-laced beat as she switched up the tempo of her delivery. The Houston native spit lines about making her children proud before showing off a bit of versatility on the mic. She interpolated Latto’s hit single before hitting a double entendre about “staying ten toes down.” Fans of Tobe Nwigwe may recognize Grant from his past performances. Nonetheless, Grant’s hunger in her verse shows she is ready for a similar ascension as her former collaborator.

That Mexican OT rounded out the televised freestyle session. Dressed in a Black Panther t-shirt, the newcomer punched in with his signature double-time flow. With his Paul Wall-esque delivery, OT leaned into his Texas roots while bringing something fresh to the table. The Mexican Outta Texas put the crowd on notice as he sped up and slowed down his timing with ease.

And, of course, the three artists’ performance had the internet buzzing. One social media user declared she couldn’t get over Maiya’s verse. “Okay so top cypher verse I can’t get out of my head is Maiya Da Don,” they typed. “Straight fire.” Another account stood tall for OT and insisted that he been dope before his cypher. “Tf yall mean just now hearing about @ThatMexicanOT_he been doing this sh*t for years,” they asserted.
